How the price is worked out

A standby generator has an installed price by size for each package, with the automatic transfer switch and a ready-made pad. In the sample, a generator for most of the home (about 18 to 22 kW) is $12,500 (Standard) or $14,500 (Premium). The wiring and fuel line are $30 per foot (25 feet, $750) and the permit and inspection $450. That gives $13,700 and $15,700 before tax.

A portable generator inlet box and interlock ($1,400 or $1,800) or a transfer switch ($1,900 or $2,400) uses a cable to the panel at $12 per foot, with a smaller permit fee. A poured concrete pad adds $650. If the customer doesn't know what the generator should run, the estimate shows a range from essentials only up to most of the home. A new or larger propane tank is priced after a visit while the generator is still priced.

What you can change

  • Installed prices for each setup and generator size, for each package.
  • Rates per foot, the concrete pad and the permit fee for each setup.
  • The distance assumed when the customer doesn't know it.
  • Your minimum job price and rounding.

What still needs your visit

A load check, the gas supply and where the generator can sit. The estimate shows its assumptions and says the price is preliminary.
